Attending a party at the manor house of her childhood friend, Lord Chiswick, Elspeth is resigned to yet another matchmaking attempt by Lady Chiswick when she is introduced to the handsome Earl of Westmarch. But Elspeth barely has a chance to strengthen the defenses of her wayward heart when they receive terrible news. Lord Chiswick is dead--thrown from his horse. Elspeth is aghast. How could such an accident have happened? He was an expert horseman, riding along a well-known path; it all seems impossible. Then, she finds a bloodstained stone near the scene of the accident and recalls the contest they'd all participated in the previous day. Several of the guests, and Lady Chiswick, were excellent marksmen with a sling and similar stones.

It isn't hard to conclude that Chiswick's accident was no accident. One of them use the sling to murder him. But who? Chiswick's cold but beautiful wife? One of the other guests? The earl? Elspeth can't believe any of them were responsible, particularly the attractive earl, who has somehow managed to breach her defenses with his devastating smile. But someone aimed that stone at Chiswick, and Elspeth sets out to discover the truth, no matter how painful it may prove to be.

I love historical romances any mysteries. I was excited to find both in one book. However, I feel the romance was short changed and the HEA felt rushed. The hero declared his feelings in the last few pages of the last chapter and just the chapter before the H is holding out hope to Anne, the secondary character, that there could be something between them. I was very irritated that the H kept pushing the h towards friendship with Anne, the main secondary character. I did not feel Anne deserved all of this "consideration" by the H at the detriment of the h. Now that I look back on the book, even the mystery was short changed. The h never shared all she knew with the constable so how could the murder be solved???

Elspeth is living at home with her financially strapped widowed mother and her mother’s spinster sister. Their neighbor, Baron Charles Chiswick, has been a lifelong friend her mother had hoped would ask Elspeth to be his wife. But, instead he married a beautiful blonde debutant. Although Elspeth was disappointed she has been happy for him and his wife as they had three wonderful sons over the years of their marriage and all seemed well, until recently. Charles confesses to her that his wife has nearly driven him into financial ruin and strongly suggested she has not been faithful to him; he plans to file for divorce even though it will cause a horrible scandal. He wants Elspeth to marry him when he becomes free which she could never do. She sees him as a good friend and feels like he is the brother she never had, but she would rather be a spinster than marry a divorced man.
Elspeth, her mother, and her aunt, are invited to a two week house party at the Chiswick mansion where her mother hopes there might be some eligible men Elspeth might meet and even at her great age of 26 be able to find a husband. Her mother spends all she can afford to get several new dresses for Elspeth so she can look her best. There is one man who Elspeth finds attractive, the Earl of Westmarch. He has been a lifelong friend of Charles’s wife, Anne, and is very fond of her. He is aware of her flirtatious behavior with other men as her husband looks on but feels she is a good mother and would not carry through with any questionable activities. Then Charles is found dead, possibly murdered, and he feels obligated to help Elspeth get to the truth of the matter.
Could the beautiful but cold Anne be a murderer? What about her mocking, cynical, and self-superior brother, Toby Hamilton? Elspeth overheard someone asking Charles for money and he became very angry; was it Toby? What about the Earl, Geoffrey Grey; has he been in love with Anne all this time and just waiting for her to be free? She could move up from wife of a Baron to wife of an Earl. Then there is the Meredith couple. Mr. Meredith can’t keep his eyes, and sometimes his hands, off of Anne and his wife can’t hide her anger at the way Anne flirts with her wealthy husband. If there is a murderer in the house is anyone safe? Shouldn’t Elspeth get her mother and aunt out of there? And what about her own safety; she’s the one who insisted it couldn’t have been an accident and managed to get the coroner and the constable called in. If it hadn’t been for her the murderer would have gotten away with no one suspecting their crime.
This is a great story, the writing and editing are both very good, period details are accurate, and there is no offensive language or overtly sexual descriptions. The tension between Elspeth and Westmarch is exciting and it’s fun to watch them fall in love while still suspecting each other. They both care for Charles’s and Anne’s sons and would make great foster parents for them if indeed it is their mother who killed their father. If it was someone else I suspect Anne will make it hard for Elspeth to have Westmarch.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Very enjoyable reading.
Amy Corwin writes traditional Regencies, sometimes with a romance at the heart. The characters are interesting, well fleshed out and they are written well.
This is an absolutely marvellous book, so no one will be surprised that I loved reading it. A good bit of mystery with a side serving of romance, interesting characters and settings you can see in your mind. It was also a great price. Highly recommended!
A romance and a murder mystery all in one! A nice whole sum book for any age.
Spinster Elspeth meets Lord Westlake at a houses party given by her neighbors. When the earl of Chriswick is killed! But who done it?
I enjoy reading historical romance novels. Also mystery plots are a close second choice. However, this book had it all, and was a delight to the end. The characters were all nicely given depth and were realistic people. I could picture the scenery from one house to the other as I watched the story unfold. I recommend this book.
I like Amy Corwin's regencies because her writing style is mature and usually free of annoying editing errors.A bonus is that they are clean with no graphic sex scenes. While I enjoyed the book as expected, I can't give it five stars because I felt the characters were inconsistent and the ending a little abrupt.
