My first impression of How to Plan the Perfect Hen and Stag Party by Fiona Thompson was that it was very well organised; a perfect quality for actually organising an event like this. The book is practical, easy to follow and entertaining. The author writes in detail about the planning process, time-scale, different types of events, how to budget, activities, what clothes to wear and destinations. While I was reading the book I kept thinking, if it was my hen night would I prefer to take part in a cocktail making session, learn how to Pole Dance or go on a ghost walk in Edinburgh. I don't think I would have bothered with any of those but I would have certainly liked to have had a go at driving a tank and a stint at the human football. The activities mentioned are fun and inspirational and hens or stags can join in either.The author has spent many years writing online about travel related subjects and in her new book this skill and expertise really shines through. I particularly like the way she has set out the different chapters in the section, `Getting Away From it All' covering UK destinations, Prague and other alternative cities for the traditional stag party, like Bratislava and Tallinn. The hens aren't forgotten, Milan (a shopping paradise) has top billing, followed by Bucharest and Budapest. Then we have Clubber's Choice featuring Belgrade and Berlin, two fab cities and I see Hvar is highlighted and my favourite city, Lisbon is mentioned in the Stylish Settings section. Finally, there are some wonderful choices in the last section of this chapter like Provence, cruising on the Klaralven River and renting a log cabin in Finland.
It doesn't end there - Fiona introduces a whole range of activities for hens to do at home, then there is a section on crazy outfits worn by both sexes followed by the final chapter, `It'll be Alright on the Night.' This goes into detail on how to be sensible and keep order but at the same time enjoy the party. I also think the pages of resource links are a very useful feature of the book.
My hen night days are rather behind me but I'll certainly recommend this book to my soon to be wed, niece and anyone else planning a hen or stag night - highly informative and a good, fun read.
